A Study on Playfulness of School-Aged Children -Gender, Age, and Types of Playfulness-

Abstract
This study was to see if there were any differences in playfulness among children with different conditions inciuding gender and age. Subjects for this study were 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grader students of elementary school in Gwangju. The instrument was Playfulness Scale for School-Aged Children(Cho Mee Jeong, & Choi Tae San, & Choi Myung Seon, 2008). The item frequency and percentage were used to analyze subjects¡¯ demographic quality. Cronbach ¥á for reliability verification was conducted. t-test was used to analyze gender and age differences of children¡¯s playfulness. Cluster analysis was conducted to analyze types of playfulness. For the gender and age differences of types of children¡¯s playfulness, chi-square test was conducted. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS.Data analysis above revealed following results:First, girls had better ability in emotional playfulness, social playfulness, independent playfulness, and pursuit of fun. Also girls had higher total scores of playfulness than boys. Second, older children group showed higher independent playfulness, sense of humor, pursuit of fun, and social playfulness than younger children. Third, types of playfulness were divided into four groups: high playfulness group(N=54, 18.8%), low playfulness group(N=87, 29.2%), inquisitive group(N=61, 21.2%), and having no intention of playing group(N=89, 30.9%).Fourth, for girls, the most frequent type was the group with no playfulness(40) followed by the group with low playfulness(36). For boys, the most frequent type was group with low playfulness(51) followed by the group with no playfulness(49).Fifth, many older children belonged to high playfulness group(38), low playfulness group(54), and inquisitive group(40), while many younger children belonged to having no intention of playing group(46).
